Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment
MSTC-GLOBE 2005 Extended Follow-Up Workshops
Dear MSTC-GLOBE Teachers,
Due to a no-Cost extension of the 2005 MSTC-GLOBE funds, MSTC and the NASA IV&V Facility Educator Resource Center (ERC) are able to offer a series of extended follow-up workshops just for you. Each of the workshops will provide additional materials, resources, and a $100 stipend*. All workshops will be held at the NASA ERC after normal school hours, or on Saturdays and refreshments and meals will be provided when appropriate. PLEASE sign up soon as seating is very limited (only 12 participants per workshop) and these remaining funds will soon expire. As always, do not hesitate to contact the WV GLOBE Coordinator, Todd Ensign with any questions: todd.ensign@ivv.nasa.gov or 304-367-8438
Title: Understanding GLOBE Student Data
Date(s): Sat., 4/1, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm OR Thurs. 4/13, 4:30 – 8:30 pm
Description: Looking at and understanding data may at first seem difficult, confusing or boring; however, data exploration can be exciting and a little addicting. Understanding GLOBE Student Data activities can fit into various parts of the curriculum: science (since they are environmental data), mathematics (since the data are mostly comprised of numbers), social studies (since they have a geographical location attached to them), art (since graphs and maps can take the form of shapes and colors), language arts (since written and/or oral reports on data can be generated by students), etc. This workshop will introduce you to a series of activities to better understand how to create, analyze, and integrate GLOBE maps and graphs of student data. Step-by-step procedures as well as notes on what students should see in and understand about the data are included for every activity.

Title: Elementary GLOBE
Date(s): Wed., 5/10 4:30 – 8 :30 pm
Description: One of the aspects of GLOBE that sets is apart from other science programs is the inclusion of K-5 students in the target audience. Often, it is up to the teacher to adapt the materials and protocols for younger students. Join us for this information-packed session where you will receive $50 in trade books, music, posters and more that are aligned with the most popular GLOBE learning activities and protocols including clouds, weather, and seasons. This session is presented by two elementary master teachers who have used GLOBE with both teachers and students.

Title: Operation RubyThroat, the GLOBE Hummingbird Project
Date(s): Sat., 6/3 8:30 am – 2:00 pm
Description: Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History in York, South Carolina--a conservation, education, and research organization that hosts Operation RubyThroat--has affiliated with The GLOBE Program to provide teachers with a valuable tool to connect environmental measurements to the animal behavior of hummingbirds. Through this innovative partnership, hummingbirds become a "hook" to excite K-12 students (and adults) about science learning and environmental research. In the process, young people collect real data about hummingbirds and share their findings with peers and practicing scientists across the GLOBE network. Students in all countries where ruby-throats breed (U.S. & Canada) or overwinter (Mexico & Central America) also submit data about more traditional GLOBE protocols, including atmosphere/climate, hydrology, soils, land cover, and phenology. All this information can then be examined and graphed on-line for possible correlations, perhaps allowing students and cooperating scientists to see the impact of environmental factors on hummingbird activities. Teachers participating in this workshop will receive protocols, learning activities and a $25 hummingbird feeder.
